If there's no action, you haven't truly decided.
So once again I could not make it through another month without starting something NEW! I saw THIS QUILT on the AQS blog and really liked it. I had a strip roll from Blank textiles that I thought would work well. Remember I was auditioning blacks for use with several projects. You can see the pictures in this post. After looking through my solids stash twice I came up with enough of the same black to use for the quilt.
I have the 5 inch square die for my Accuquilt Studio Cutter so I will be using it to cut the black squares I need for the quilt. I have already done the subcuts on the strips. You can see them here.
Notice the little pile of scraps to the right and their very divergent sizes? This is the second strip roll that I have used this year and so far I AM NOT IMPRESSED! Both were cut crooked. This one had strips that were almost 3 inches different in length. The different sizes make it hard to depend on the being able to get the same cuts from the strips. Some of them I will even have to use part of the selvedge to get what I need and you can see what is left from other strips. All of the strips were over 1/8" narrower near the fold. I will have to make a number of adjustments when sewing the blocks together.
HERE is the video tutorial for the quilt. It is one by the Missouri Star Quilt Company. The quilt in the video doesn't look anything like the one in the link above. I chose to cut the strips to the sizes needed rather than doing it the way the video shows. After I started having problems with the strip lengths I was really glad I did. I would not have had nearly enough fabric to do it the other way.
Which method would you prefer to use if the quantity of fabric was not an issue?
Have you had any problems with strip rolls?

That totally sucks that they aren't cut straight, you would expect them to be precision cut.
ReplyDeleteThat's a shame about your rolls. I get some pretty wonky ones from swaps sometimes and just end up cutting them up into smaller pieces... not much else you can do!
ReplyDeleteI thought it was only me that got wonky strips from jelly rolls. Love the colors that I am seeing though.
ReplyDeleteBummer with the strip roll. I've basically quit purchasing the strips because of problems in the past.
ReplyDeleteI've not had the problem with "Jelly Rolls" by Moda but if I get strip sets that have been cut by a LQS I've noticed that problem.
ReplyDeleteI am so sorry that you had a bad experience with precuts. I rarely buy them, even though you do usually get a great variety of fabrics - unless you buy a specific solid roll. That has to be very, very frustrating. I dislike the precuts that have the zigzag edge. I don't know if the edge is the outside of the zag or the inside of the zig. I guess I just like having a least some control over my cutting. Good luck on your quilt.
ReplyDeletelike you i have had a problem, bought 3 jelly rolls 2 were perfect but the batik one, all the strips were narrower than than they should have been, , now cut my own if needed, shame as the first 2 were okay . Popped over and looked at the quilt you are planning to make, very nice
ReplyDeleteI don't get 2.5 inch precuts. I cut my own. Sometimes when you get fat quarters some will be scant and others will be generous. Every precut has its problems I guess.
ReplyDeleteI haven't done much with precuts because I've read to many horror stories like this one. So sorry.
ReplyDeleteI had never heard of problems with the precut strips before but haven't really used them either. Will certainly think twice about using them now!
ReplyDeleteI have not used many strip rolls, but Have not had a problem.
