Goals for February

The true secret of happiness lies in the taking a genuine interest in all the details of daily life.
William Morris

Looking for the Grow Your Blog Giveaway?  It's HERE

January is gone and February is off to a sunny start.  It rained this morning for a while but we could go out yesterday without a coat.  Nice!  I don't think the cold is gone for long though.  Spring is coming, it can't stay cold forever.

I spent a good bit of time in the studio last month but I didn't get anything finished. SIGH!
I allowed myself some time playing and piecing.  I also spent some time planning a few NEW PROJECTS, not that I needed any more to do.  I just have to PLAY and what I have the most fun with is planning something NEW.  Anyone else have that problem?

The most exciting NEW PROJECT is the Fab 4 Quilt Along I planned.  You can read about it in yesterday's post.  I do hope some of you will join me!  I will have details up in the next day or two.

These were my goals for January.  I think I will just roll them over for this month because I made very little progress. Progress is noted in blue.

1. Grandson's quilt finish top, quilt and bind. I've got the border ready to sew on at least.
2. Tribble Trouble quilted  Backing made.
3. Bow Tie #1 quilted  Backing made.
4. Bow Tie #2 quilted
5. Applique quilt quilted
6. Charity Plaid Tumblers quilted
7. Do some embroidery on my machine.  Still haven't played with the new toy, sigh.
8. Design baby quilt. Baby comes in June, need to get started.
9. Cut out a quilt with the Accuquilt Studio cutter. Yes, I did that!

For February I'll be adding:

10. Get the Fab 4 Quilt Along Quilt made, photographed and ALL the posts done.
11. Get the Rainbow Scrap Challenge Block(s) made.
12. Make a few UFO Block of the Month blocks.

So just what did I spend my time doing?  Well I got a little ironing done.  There is always a large pile of fabric that I've pre-washed waiting for that.

I played with some of the Block of the Month blocks that I had designed when I had my shop and never finished.  I want to finish them because they fill several large containers in the studio.  I may even share some of the patterns with you in the future but I have to get them done first.  It took a while to sort out which fabrics went with which blocks.  I thought I had them all organized but I guess not.

I found one block that I could cut out the pieces with the Accuquilt Studio.  That was fun and they turned out so tidy and neat.  I still need to press the block.

I worked on my half square triangle quilt that I had started with a charm square bundle.  They are now all flying geese units.  Not liking this arrangement it's too scrappy for the chevrons.  I have a few more to correct and then I think I'll put them in rows of geese.  If it needs sashing strips between the rows I'm going to have to do some more digging in the stash.  That's what's on the design wall today.

I put one border together for the baby quilt.

I decided I didn't like it.  It was to heavy and dark.  So I tried again. It took all the focus off the star blocks.  I stared at it for days and it didn't work for me.

I think this one will work.  I left out all the solids and just used the dots.  I will add another border of the white dotted background to the outer edge.  The stars will remain the focus now.  But there is more to the story.

Remember I said I had enough parts for another quilt?  Well I sewed the blocks together using 4 colors in each one.  I really like them much better.  Here they are pinned on top of the other blocks.  I need to decide how to sew them together.  Do I want the same arrangement or try something different?

There are 2 of each combination but by turning them differently it isn't obvious at all.  What do you think?

I did get busy and cut out a bunch of strips with the Accuquilt Studio Cutter.  This is the block I made for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge.  You can read more about it HERE.  I have several other projects planned to work on for that challenge too.

This is more than enough to keep me busy for the month.  Now if I can just get some finished I will feel better about having so many projects underway.

NewFOs for 2014

Whatever we learn has a purpose and whatever we do affects everything and everyone else, if even in the tiniest way. Why, when a housefly flaps his wings, a breeze goes round the world; when a speck of dust falls to the ground, the entire planet weighs a little more; and when you stamp your foot, the earth moves slightly off its course. Whenever you laugh, gladness spreads like the ripples in a pond; and whenever you're sad, no one anywhere can be really happy. And it's much the same thing with knowledge, for whenever you learn something new, the whole world becomes that much richer.
Norton Juster

I am going to join up with Barbara again next year in her NewFO Challenge.  It's really not much of a challenge for me to start NEW projects anyway.  My challenge comes with being able to FINISH the OLD ones.  LOL

2014 NewFO Challenge

Now Barbara and many of those that join her in this endeavor make a rather exact list of projects for the new year.  I didn't last year and I don't think I will this time either.  I planned to use some of the templates that I have hoarded accumulated over the years. I even bought some new ones this year that I had to add to the list.

I still want to do some tutorials on these templates for you.  Let me know if there is a specific one you would like to learn more about and it might get moved to the top of the 'to do' list.

Soscrppy

I also I want to join the RSC14.  I have been reading several blogs, including Barbara's, that participate in this one.  Since two of the quilts I have on my list of want to make are Rainbow Color Schemes why not.  I want to make a Storm at Sea (have the templates) and also a Dancing Stars by Amy Ellis why not.  I will be using templates for the later one even though her directions are for paper piecing.

I also have a new toy workhorse in the Studio to use. I'll have to post more about the templates I have bought to use with it another time.  They are definitely at the top of the 'to do' list.

Then there is the embroidery unit for my new Dreamweaver.  I had hoped to get some Christmas Lace Ornaments made on it but so far it hasn't happened.  There are still a few days left before Christmas.  Maybe it will happen. I'm still reading the manual and can't make it to my new owner classes until January.

That's about as far as I am going with plans right now.  As you can see I shouldn't get bored anytime soon.  Plus, I have to keep you entertained too!

Bits and Pieces at a Time

Do it now! can affect every phase of your life. It can help you do the things you should do but don't feel like doing. It can keep you from procrastinating when an unpleasant duty faces you. But it can also help you do those things that you want to do. It helps you seize those precious moments that, if lost, may never be retrieved.
Napoleon Hill

I have been busy in my studio and trying to stay off the computer.  I can actually get a few more things done if I don't spend as many hours in Blog Land!  My husband had a birthday last week, one of those ending in '9', and mine is fast approaching.  They make you think of what you have accomplished in this world so far and what you want to accomplish before you check out.  When you know there are more days behind you than ahead you can really start to zone in on what needs to be done.  Not trying to be morbid here, just facing reality.

One of the realities we faced this month was that our deck had seen much better days.  Here is a picture from last year.  Even the quilt doesn't make it look better.

The Old Deck

Here are a couple of shots from last week.

Looking out from my dining area door.

Looking up from the yard.

The joists and posts were fine so we didn't replace those.  The top boards and rails were a different story.  I'll have more pictures later.  There are still a few finishing touches to be done but WOW you will like the results.

On the Quilting Front I got this Turning 20 quilted.  It's not mine so you only get a peek.  That's ONE off my to do list marked DONE!

I also got this baby quilt bound.  This is a new picture of the quilt bound and washed.  That makes TWO items DONE!

I'm still playing with the decorative stitches when finishing the binding.  On this one I used a feather stitch and I liked it much better than the 3 step Zig Zag.  I think next time I'll try sewing the binding on the back so the stitches will be on the binding on the front side.

My long losing streak has ended!  I won a prize from none other than the awesome Amy Bradley during the Ho, Ho, Ho Blog Hop!  My prize arrived, the lovely Dragonfly pattern along with a cute little blank card and a discount coupon for her web site.  This one is so cute! It will be on my 'to do list' soon!  Boy does that woman have talent!

Many Thanks to Amy!

This is a picture of my elephant ears because I haven't forgotten about the EQ Giveaway I've been promising.  (Do you get it?  Elephants don't forget.)  This week I hit 50,000 page views on the blog!  I know to many of you this is a small number.  I also am approaching 500 followers if I add up the different numbers of the ways people can follow my blog.  I may be over it but there are some methods that I can't track.  Or, I may be way under because I know many of you have been using different ways to follow since Google Reader stopped and so I may be counting you twice.

The Elephant Ears have loved all the rain this summer!

One of the reasons I haven't posted was because I couldn't find the EQ7 package.  It had been put in a 'safe place' I was sure but I couldn't remember where.  I've been looking for it for several weeks.  Now I'm not one that loses things on a regular basis.  Even in the chaos of my studio I can usually put my hands on what I'm looking for without to much effort.  There are exceptions to this of course.  Anyway I didn't want to start publicizing the giveaway until I had my hands on it.  Finally this week I found it!  It was of course in plain sight, sort of.  I had been looking for the software box.  Finally I was sitting at my sewing machine and it occurred to me that it had been in the cardboard shipping box last time I saw it.   I turned my head and there it was, right were I had walked by it at least twice every time I went down the stairs to my studio.  LOL

This little search has made me realize that my studio has reached CRITICAL MASS!  So I have started to put away some of the fabric and projects that have been laying about.  Part of the reason for the mess is that for the months when I was having knee pain I or my husband would just take things downstairs and dump them.  Then in June I cleaned out the extra bedroom removing all the things there that I had been using to sew upstairs.  I made a small dent in things yesterday and will continue to work on it Bits and Pieces at a Time.  I need to be running my Innova and getting a number of quilts done so the cleaning and sorting will be done on my breaks.  NO, I'M NOT TAKING PICTURES of the BEFORE!!!

Oh, but you want to hear more about the Giveaway don't you!  I promised summer, which doesn't end until the 3rd week of September.  I'm thinking it will run the first 2 weeks of September.  This one will be for FOLLOWERS ONLY!  Look for the post Labor Day Weekend.

Well, that's a few bits of what's been happening in my life.  What have you lost or found lately?

August Goals

Every day you may make progress. Every step may be fruitful. Yet there will stretch out before you an ever-lengthening, ever-ascending, ever-improving path. You know you will never get to the end of the journey. But this, far from discouraging, only adds to the joy and glory of the climb.
Sir Winston Churchill

Well another month has flown by!  I spent most of it with a Christmas mindset and now must come back to the present.  I had a busy month with many goals and made half of them.  I'm calling it a good month because it was a LONG LIST!

Adding to my angst was continuing internet connection difficulties.  I have self diagnosed a router problem and will getting a new one this week.  Hopefully that will be the solution.  I would have done more blogging if it had not been such an exercise in frustration for me.  I have learned when to just walk away and get on with something else.

Charity Baby Quilt
You can see more details of the Tweety Bird quilt on THIS POST.

Christmas Tree Skirt
The directions for making the Tree Skirt can be FOUND HERE.

Christmas Table Runner
More pictures of the Table Runner and the quilting on it ARE HERE.  There is a GIVEAWAY OPEN on that post through August 9th.

Flannel Baby Blanket
I have been trying to get the tutorial for the Flannel Baby Blanket done all year.  It was one of those things that needed less than 30 minutes of sewing to finish and then the pictures edited.  It's all done so be looking for the tutorial to post.  It is a great fast gift for a shower.

I'll share a couple of other pictures of NEW PROJECTS on my New UFO Post soon.

This month I need to be chained to my Innova Longarm!  I have at least 12 BED SIZED quilt tops that need to be done SOON!  I'm finally feeling comfortable enough with the machine to get busy on them.  I didn't put them all on the list for the month but I'm hoping to at least make a large dent in the stack!

July Goals

When you can think of yesterday without regret and tomorrow without fear, you are near contentment.

Unknown

Yes, another month has flown by.  I knew at the start of it there would be several trips and so it would be difficult to accomplish many goals.  I was right I spent about half the month away from home.  No regrets, time with family and extended family is to be savored regardless of the circumstances when we live so far apart.  Quilting is after all something I do with a creative purpose.  People and relationships are more important!

Goals for June:
  1. Get the Baby Blanket Finished (and the tutorial written) - Not Done
  2. Get the Top done for the Grandson's Quilt - Blocks Made
  3. Spend MORE QUALITY TIME with my new INNOVA!!! - One Quilt Done
  4. Get at least one Charity Quilt Quilted - Done
  5. Make progress on piecing a Charity Quilt - Churn Dash Units Made
  6. Quilt and Bind Log Cabin Quilt - No Progress
  7. Quilt Turning 20 Quilt - No Progress

I will have pictures of the Charity Quilt when I get it bound.  Right now it is off the longarm, has been trimmed and the binding is cut.  The blocks shown above have been pressed and are ready for their corner triangles.  I'll have more about which pattern I am using and the book it is from later.

July WILL BE MORE PRODUCTIVE!!! Because I say so AND because I am participating in the two blog hops which have buttons at the top right of this blog.  I'll be tell more about them soon and have to concentrate and work fast to get things DONE!!!

July Goals:
  1. Get Christmas Project #1 made and blogged about
  2. Get Christmas Project(s) for Blog Hop #2 done and ready to blog about
  3. Get the Baby Blanket Finished (and the tutorial written)
  4. Get the Top done for the Grandson's Quilt
  5. Spend MORE QUALITY TIME with my new INNOVA!!!
  6. Get at least one Charity Quilt Quilted
  7. Get at least one Charity Quilt Bound
  8. Make progress on piecing a Charity Quilt
  9. Quilt and Bind Log Cabin Quilt
  10. Quilt Turning 20 Quilt
I have been trying to get this post written for several days.  The weather has been a factor in that the router goes off when there is thunder and lightning.  Google has also been off line for me some this week and my laptop has been giving me grief too.  Sigh.

The good news is that due to my internet and computer difficulties I made some progress in my studio.  This was done in spite of my husband having a four day weekend.  ;-)  Why is it so much harder to get things done when he is around?  Anyone else have that problem?

June Goals

If you're bored with life -- you don't get up every morning with a burning desire to do things -- you don't have enough goals.
Lou Holtz

It's June already!  Time to set a few goals and review May, it was a busy month but I did get a few things done. Yeah!

I finished TWO bed size quilts that and been waiting patiently for binding for way too long.  Nothing like procrastination.  You've already seen the pictures but I'll let you see them again.

Calico Mystery

The Sunny Side

Goals for May were:

  5. Get a quilt selected and finished for the Blogger's Quilt Festival - DONE
  6. Make progress on a few Charity Quilts - TWO CUT OUT, ONE BEING QUILTED
So progress was made on the list, still more to get done.

Goals for June:
  1. Get the Baby Blanket Finished (and the tutorial written)

  3. Spend MORE QUALITY TIME with my new INNOVA!!!
  4. Get at least one Charity Quilt Quilted

I will be on the road for almost a week soon but I will be sewing while I'm gone.  The grandson's quilt project will be going with me and I should get the top done.

Now for a peek at what's in the yard now.  We picked up 3 of these great yellow Calla Lily plants last week and Mr. CPA got them planted. Aren't they gorgeous?  He works so hard in the hard.  I'll share another project he has been working on soon as well as more flowers.

May Goals

One of the most attractive things about the flowers is their beautiful reserve.

Henry David Thoreau

So we drove to Western Massachusetts, the Berkshire Mountains.  It was a long ride.  The odometer said we traveled about 2400 miles when we got back home.  The Berkshire area is lovely.  Spring had not arrived, daffodils were in full bloom up there.  Remember mine started opening the first week of the year.  That was a real sign as to how different our weather is during the seasons.  I really would love to live in the Southern Appalachian Mountains.  I would enjoy snow as a treat, not as a winter constant.

Daffodils in Lee, Massachusetts

Leaves were just sprouting out when we left Georgia.  In Massachusetts the trees were still bare.  On our trip home it was like watching spring come mile by mile.  Here in Georgia most of the trees now have full grown leaves.

I had been afraid that I was going to miss the blooms on my colorful irises while we were gone.   I was so glad that I didn't!

My Irises in Georgia

There had been a few buds on them when we left.  I was delighted to see them in full bloom as we arrived home.  Misty is not impressed by flowers.  It takes a squirrel siting to get her excited.  I put her in the picture so you could tell how tall the flowers are.

I knew April would be a hard month to get much done but some things were accomplished.  It's impossible to sew when you are gone for 12 days and have to spend several more dealing with the before and after I leave details.

Goals for April were:
  1. Hand stitch binding on Mystery Quilt -  I took it with me and I'm about half way done
  2. Finish Orange and Blue Tumbler Top - DONE!!!
  3. Finish Baby Blanket - I should be able to finish it in less than 30 minutes - no progress
  4. Make a NEW start on a quilt for new grandson - I have got the fabric and a design selected

I also FINISHED the Pink Poodle Flannel Baby Quilt that was not on the to do list.  I posted a picture of it on my previous post.  Yeah!  Progress.

BETTER YET - I finished putting my
INNOVA TOGETHER!!! AND IT WORKS!!!!

Goals for May:
  1. Finish Hand Stitching Binding on Mystery Quilt
  2. Get the Baby Blanket Finished (and the tutorial written)
  3. Get the Top done for the Grandson's Quilt - He WILL be coming this month for sure!
  4. Spend some QUALITY TIME with my new INNOVA!!!
  5. Get a quilt selected and finished for the Blogger's Quilt Festival
  6. Make progress on a few Charity Quilts
I'm sure that is more than enough to do this month.  At least I'll be home more and not away from my machines!  Progress will be made!

I'm also commented to participating in several blogging events this month so you will be hearing more from me very soon.  Monday starts it off with the Sew Mama Sew Giveaway Day. I'll be getting my prizes together this weekend.  If you haven't participated in one before you can enter to win on hundreds of blogs.  FUN!!!

I'm also declaring that MAY for ME!!  Can you find 5 minutes a day to do something for yourself this month?  Join in the fun!

Marcia's crafty sewing & quilting

I have more to share about our trip and the goodies I brought home.  I've got a few more pictures to get edited before I can share but you will be hearing more shortly.

April Goals

There is no time like the old time, when you and I were young,
When the buds of April blossomed, and the birds of spring-time sung!
The gardens brightest glories by summer suns are nursed,
But oh, the sweet, sweet violets, the flowers that opened first!
There is no place like the old place, where you and I were born,
Where we lifted first our eyelids on the splendors of the morn
From the milk-white breast that warmed us, from the clinging arms that bore,
Where the dear eyes glistened o'er us that will look on us no more!
There is no friend like the old friend, who has shared our morning days,
No greeting like his welcome, no homage like his praise:
Fame is the scentless sunflower, with gaudy crown of gold;
But friendship is the breathing rose, with sweets in every fold.
There is no love like the old love, that we courted in our pride;
Though our leaves are falling, falling, and were fading side by side,
There are blossoms all around us with the colors of our dawn,
And we live in borrowed sunshine when the day-star is withdrawn.
There are no times like the old times, they shall never be forgot!
There is no place like the old place, keep green the dear old spot!
There are no friends like our old friends, may Heaven prolong their lives!
There are no loves like our old loves, God bless our loving wives!

Oliver Wendell Holmes

A lovely choir of Iris is singing of Spring
in my yard this week.

When I was looking for a quote for my previous post I found the one above.  I really love the imagery!  I don't think I've ever read it before.  Spring does make me a little homesick for times gone by.  I went by the farm where I grew up a couple of weeks ago.  I wanted to take a few pictures of the flowers.  Mother always loved to make things grow.  The irises above were transplanted from her yard.  The following flowers were blooming at the farm.

A trio of late daffodils

Fluffy pink azaleas

Pale magenta azaleas
A few white ones were peaking out

These intrigued me because the freckles and deep shades
were only on half the blossom
This Spring has been a little slow coming here in Georgia.  Just when it starts to warm up we get another cold snap.  This week had so far felt more like Spring but it's raining and cold again.

Love the artsy bokeh shot
of the forsythia
I haven't been using my new camera much for blogging but I took these flower shots with it.  I had forgotten how much I love it.  It's just a bit of overkill in file size for blog pix.  Bokeh, for those who don't know, is the word for the blurred background in photos.  My In Laws had a huge forsythia bush when they lived in Georgia 30 years ago.  This one at the farm is rather small.  We have planted a couple in our yard but they have died each time so my husband has given up on them.  The only time I like them is when they bloom anyway.  They aren't very attractive the rest of the year IMHO.

April came in bearing bad news.  My Mother in Law has been suffering from Alzheimer's for a few years now.  She is now in the last stages and hospice has been called.  She will turn 80 on the 12th of this month if she lasts that long.  This is a horrible disease.

Mother loved Camillas.  Most of them were past there prime but I found a few.  The one below is the palest of pinks and the petals are waxy feeling.

Enough with the flower show.  I guess you cold people up North are drooling for Spring now.  LOL
If it's any comfort it is in the low 40s here today.

Now on to some quilty content.

Goals for March:
  1. Hand stitch binding on Mystery Quilt - not a stitch made
  2. Get Borders on Kid's Quilt - still on the list
  3. Finish Orange and Blue Tumbler Top - still on the design wall
  4. Quilt small Charity quilt on Longarm to see how knee holds up to the movement - DONE!!!
  5. Finish Baby Blanket - do a tutorial for blog on the technique - almost finished
  6. Get started on quilt for new grandson coming in May - STARTED but not liking it for the baby

Goals for April:  I'll make it VERY light this month.  We will be doing some traveling this month, some planned and perhaps some unplanned as yet due to the situation above.  I'll be surprised if I get to turn on a machine a dozen times.
  1. Hand stitch binding on Mystery Quilt - this will travel well
  2. Finish Orange and Blue Tumbler Top - I need to move it out of the room so DH can paint
  3. Finish Baby Blanket - I should be able to finish it in less than 30 minutes
  4. Make a NEW start on a quilt for new grandson - he might show up this month
NOW, I've been dropping a few hints and some of you have guessed what else I purchased at the Expo.  They say nice things come in little boxes but I know that some pretty great things can come in BIG BOXES too.  This is what showed up in my large enclosed storage space garage last week.

The LONG and TALL and very HEAVY

How about a closer look
